STUDIO OFFICE, EDINBURGH
The 45 m2 timber and glass building situated in the established grounds of a villa in the Merchiston/Greenhill Conservation Area were designed to replace a dilapidated asbestos clad garage.
Historical maps helped persuade the planners that this timber and glass structure followed the original pattern of ancillary structures established in the 1840s.
Within a volume space extending to a height of over 4.3 metres flexible accommodation is designed for use as a working studio office, a dwelling or a summerhouse and potting shed.
Built against two stone boundary walls and of timber frame construction, natural light is maximised with a waterfall rooflight cedar cladding, and its connection to a mature garden landscape is emphasises by glazed doors. The cladding is cedar with cedar roof shingles.
The introduction of a steel and glass mezzanine floor and external shading is planned for 2008.
