Established local charity Open Door provides voluntary support to groups and individuals throughout South Edinburgh.
Operating on a shoestring budget and facing increasing repair bills Open Door sought advice on available options for improved facilities and optimising use of space.
A full premises audit, building condition survey and option appraisal of the listed building enabled Open Door to secure a long-term lease and the Communities Fund to provide assistance with the cost of upgrading and improvement works.
New cafe facilities, office and meeting spaces were formed. Thermal performance was improved. A new access lift was installed, food preparation areas and toilet facilities upgraded to meet statutory requirements.
Maintaining continuity of service provision for Open Door during two phases of upgrading works was an important consideration. The facilities have enabled Open Door to significantly expand its services to the community.
