HOUSE IN KINTYRE, ARGYLL
The house is conceived as a contemporary landmark in a 200 year old estate landscape which contains a number of distinct designed features, separated by woodland enclosures and connected by a labyrinth of overgrown tracks and paths.
The towering forms of the north elevation contrast with a restful pattern of solid and void, with contrasting textures of bleached timber and glass of the principal south facade.
On the south elevation windows are recessed for shade. And large sliding timber screens control glare. Materials are lime render, oak cladding, glass and slate.
The house is designed to be carbon neutral. Solar gain and airtightness are maximised. Thick timber framed walls are highly insulated. Heating and hot water are supplied by on-site biomass.
