CLUBHOUSE AT CRAIGIELAW GOLF CLUB

A new clubhouse for the championship course at Craigielaw, East Lothian was designed by David Orlowski in conjunction with Smiths Gore.

The cattle courts within a derelict farm steading were cleared and existing stone walls either carefully retained or rebuilt. The hard stone shell provides a striking contrast to new interventions in glass, larch boards and copper.

A suite of connected lounges and terraces was created to take advantage of the views over the course and the Forth, with conservatory dining overlooking the sheltered south-facing courtyard. Club facilities were planned to allow for massive expansion during major events with a marquee in the courtyard.

Archaeological investigation revealed a previously demolished horse mill in an almost identical location to the circular feature golf shop designed beside the main entrance.

Copper clad roof natural ventilation 'chimneys', a distinctive feature of the building draw low-level fresh air and bring natural light into first floor accommodation within the roof.
