AFFORDABLE HOUSING, SCOTTISH BORDERS
The listed weavers' cottages that are an historic feature of this Tweeddale village are re-interpreted as a model for sustainable low-cost housing.
Four linked units are orientated to maximise solar gain. Each has a double height sun room with a green roof and extra thermal mass. This provides a winter garden and allows heat transfer into the house when needed.
Timber framed SIPS construction, an airtight envelope and passive whole house ventilation are deployed to reduce energy need and enhance natural comfort. Wall finishes are lime render and larch untreated cladding.
